Janssen COVID 19-Vaccine - Obtaining the Expiration Date

Last Updated: 12/26/2022

SUMMARY

  • The Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine has been granted an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine has not been approved or licensed by FDA, but has been authorized for emergency use by FDA, under an EUA for active immunization to prevent Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in individuals 18 years of age and older for whom other FDA-authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccines are not accessible or clinically appropriate, and in individuals 18 years of age and older who elect to receive the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine because they would otherwise not receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The emergency use of this product is only authorized for the duration of the declaration that circumstances exist justifying the authorization of the emergency use of the medical product under Section 564(b)(1) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act unless the declaration is terminated or authorization revoked sooner.1, 2
  • The storage and handling information in the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine Fact Sheet supersedes the storage and handling information on the carton and vial labels.1
  • The Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine vials and cartons do not contain a printed expiration date. The www.vaxcheck.jnj site is up-to-date for the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine. Janssen is conducting ongoing stability assessment studies for the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine. Expiry dates may be updated as data from these studies become available.
    • On April 7, 2022, the FDA approved an extension of the shelf life for the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine from 9 months (270 days) to 11 months (330 days).3
    • Please note that the shelf-life extension applies to all batches that have been released to the US market. The shelf life extension from 9 months to 11 months is applicable to vials that recently expired as long as unopened, unpunctured vials continued to be stored according to the recommended storage conditions. Please check www.vaxcheck.jnj for updated information.
  • How: The expiration date can be obtained by entering the lot number from the carton or vial using the website www.vaxcheck.jnj or by phone using an automated response system at 1-800-565-4008. This critical process should take less than one minute to complete.
    • The Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered until 11:59 pm EST on the expiry date.
    • Janssen has not conducted studies to evaluate the efficacy or safety following administration of expired vaccine.
  • When: With every new lot, obtain the expiration date prior to the first patient administration.
    • Do not administer restricted (i.e., recalled or expired) product to a patient.
    • Prior to discarding any doses of the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine, please confirm the expiration date on www.vaxcheck.jnj.
    • Discard/return the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine according to state and federal regulations.
  • Other: A manufactured date appears on the packaging and should not be used as the expiration date or as a reference point to determine the expiration date.
